Electric vehicle charging at a residential property

EV charger grants for renters and flat owners

If you rent your home or own a flat, a grant route may exist towards an eligible chargepoint — subject to scheme criteria, the property's parking, your vehicle and approval by the funding body.

It is the route with the most conditions attached, and the one where doing things in the wrong order costs the most money.

Government chargepoint grant

Active

EV chargepoint grant for households with eligibility requirements

A grant route for people who rent, or who own a flat, and who therefore cannot use the standard homeowner chargepoint grant. It contributes towards an eligible chargepoint at a property with eligible private parking.

Designed for
Tenant, Flat owner
Potential support
Up to 350 pounds per eligible chargepoint, within published scheme limits.
Key considerations
Renters and flat owners, with off-street private parking at the property, an eligible vehicle, permission from the landlord or freeholder where required, and an eligible installer. The grant must be approved before installation starts.

Details pending confirmation

Landlord chargepoint support

Support for residential landlords and property portfolio holders installing charging at let properties or developments. The routes available to landlords have been restructured more than once, so the currently open route is confirmed per project.

Designed for
Landlord, Business
Potential support
Published per-chargepoint support, subject to the route in force.
Key considerations
Landlords and portfolio holders with eligible off-street parking, an eligible property, tenant or resident use, and installation by an eligible installer after approval.

Local authority chargepoint funding

Details pending confirmation

On-street residential chargepoint funding (local authority led)

Funding for residential on-street charging is generally awarded to local authorities rather than to individual residents. Where a council has secured funding, residents apply through the council's own process, and the council sets the rules.

Designed for
Homeowner, Tenant, Flat owner, Landlord, Public-sector organisation
Potential support
Set by the local authority's own award.
Key considerations
Determined by the local authority's own scheme, the street, the footway and the property. Cross-pavement solutions, where permitted, also require council approval and may require planning permission.

What you need to know

Who the route is designed for

The scheme exists because tenants and flat owners were least able to install charging without support. It is not a general homeowner grant, and it is not automatic: the property, the parking, the vehicle and the permission all have to line up.

Where a landlord is installing charging across a development, a different route may apply — which is why we ask who is giving permission before we ask what charger you want.

What the scheme normally asks for

The published conditions are specific, and they are checked at application rather than at installation.

  • Off-street private parking that serves the property
  • A vehicle that meets the scheme's current eligibility conditions
  • Written permission from the landlord, freeholder or factor where required
  • An eligible installer, named on the application
  • Approval in place before any work starts

Where these projects go wrong

Two failures account for most lost grant claims: work starting before approval, and a parking arrangement that does not meet the scheme's definition of private off-street parking. Shared, unallocated or on-street parking usually needs a different conversation entirely.

Do not start installation before the grant approval process is complete

An installation carried out before approval can fall outside the scheme, and the funding body is not obliged to consider it afterwards. Check the approval route, then instruct the work.

Tell us whether you rent or own, what the parking is like, and who can give permission. We will tell you which route applies and what the survey needs to record.

We use your details to respond to this enquiry only. We do not apply for funding on your behalf, and we do not decide whether you are eligible.

Already have renewable assets?

Funding is not the only opportunity. Understanding the condition, safety and performance of existing solar, battery or charging assets could identify problems, risks and optimisation opportunities — particularly where an installation has never been independently inspected.
