Energy grants and funding in Edinburgh

The funding routes available in Edinburgh are the same national routes as anywhere else in Scotland. What differs is consent: a large part of the city sits in conservation areas, and a visible change to a roof, a facade or a footway can need approval before it can be built.

This page sets out what is worth checking for Edinburgh addresses, where consent usually intervenes, and how we sequence a project around it.

Roads authority

City of Edinburgh Council, for any footway or street works

Consent

Conservation areas and listed buildings can add a planning step

Housing mix

Tenements, colonies, modern flatted developments and suburban housing

Interest-free loan and cashback

Active

Business Energy Scotland SME loan and cashback

An interest-free loan route for Scottish small and medium-sized businesses and charities installing energy-efficiency or renewable measures, with cashback support where the scheme offers it. The assessment and approval sit with the scheme.

Designed for
Business, Charity, Landlord
Potential support
Loan and cashback levels are set by the scheme. Confirm current published terms.
Key considerations
Scottish SMEs, charities and some landlords, with an eligible measure, a technical assessment and approval from the scheme. Loan terms and cashback availability are set by the scheme.

Government chargepoint grant

Active

EV chargepoint grant for households with eligibility requirements

A grant route for people who rent, or who own a flat, and who therefore cannot use the standard homeowner chargepoint grant. It contributes towards an eligible chargepoint at a property with eligible private parking.

Designed for
Tenant, Flat owner
Potential support
Up to 350 pounds per eligible chargepoint, within published scheme limits.
Key considerations
Renters and flat owners, with off-street private parking at the property, an eligible vehicle, permission from the landlord or freeholder where required, and an eligible installer. The grant must be approved before installation starts.

Government grant and interest-free loan

Active

Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan

The Scottish Government's main domestic route for clean heating and energy efficiency, administered through Home Energy Scotland. Grant support and interest-free loan funding may be available for qualifying measures, and the funding body - not Greentech - decides eligibility.

Designed for
Homeowner, Landlord
Potential support
Grant and loan levels are set by the funding body and vary by measure. Confirm the current published levels with Home Energy Scotland.
Key considerations
Scottish homeowners and some landlords, where the property and the proposed measure meet the scheme's own technical rules. An assessment and a quote from an eligible installer normally form part of the process.

Public-sector grant and loan

Details pending confirmation

Public sector decarbonisation and Salix funding

Capital support routes for public bodies and education estates decarbonising their buildings and estates, including heating, fabric and some electrical infrastructure. Applications are made by the public body, often with a technical feasibility study.

Designed for
Public-sector organisation, School / education provider, Charity
Potential support
Set by the funding programme and by the estate's application.
Key considerations
Public-sector bodies and eligible education institutions, applying through the scheme's own process, usually with a feasibility study and a quantified carbon saving.

Government fuel-poverty programme

Active

Warmer Homes Scotland

A Scottish Government programme aimed at households living in, or at risk of, fuel poverty. It provides a package of heating and insulation improvements through a national delivery contractor, following the programme's own assessment.

Designed for
Homeowner, Tenant
Potential support
The package is defined by the programme, not by Greentech.
Key considerations
Households in Scotland who meet the programme's eligibility conditions, which are assessed by the scheme. The programme has its own survey and delivery rules, and its own appointed installation contractor.

Government chargepoint grant

Active

Workplace Charging Scheme

A voucher-based grant for eligible organisations installing chargepoints for staff and visitors. The organisation applies, receives a voucher, and then books an eligible installer within the voucher period.

Designed for
Business, Charity, Public-sector organisation, School / education provider, Fleet operator
Potential support
350 pounds per eligible socket, up to the published socket cap per applicant.
Key considerations
Eligible registered businesses, charities and public-sector organisations, with off-street parking, designated staff or fleet use, and an eligible installer. Charging is not permitted to be used to generate revenue from the general public under the scheme rules.

What you need to know

Consent, heritage and the time it adds

Edinburgh adds a step Glasgow rarely does: consent. The World Heritage Site, the conservation areas and the number of listed buildings mean a visible change to a roof, a facade or a footway can require planning permission or listed building consent before installation.

That does not make a project unviable, but it changes the sequence and the timescale. We establish which consents apply to the address early, and we do not present an approval as likely or as guaranteed.

  • Panels on a roof slope visible from the street, and whether permission is needed
  • External plant, flues and heat pump siting visible to the street
  • Listed building consent where the property is listed
  • Footway works inside a conservation area

Tenements, colonies and shared fabric

Edinburgh's tenements, colonies and modern flatted developments raise the same shared-fabric questions as Glasgow's, with an extra layer where the building is protected. Common roofs, common stairs and factored buildings all need the agreement of the people who share them.

The electrical side is often the limit rather than the fabric: a flat with a single consumer unit, a communal supply with no spare capacity, or a distribution board that has no room for another way.

Offices, hospitality and the public estate

The city's office stock, hospitality premises and public buildings are where workplace charging and public-sector decarbonisation support usually get used. Older buildings often have a constrained intake and restricted working hours, and those two facts decide the design more than the funding does.

Where the applicant is a public body or an institution, the application is theirs to make. We provide the technical assessment, the scope and the evidence the application needs.

Consent is not funding

A funding decision and a planning decision are separate, and approval of one does not imply the other. We will not treat a listed building consent as likely until the council has actually decided.

Local authority guidance

Who decides on your street

Cross-pavement charging is a roads authority decision. These are the authorities covering our service area, with the process each one applies — confirmed per address before we quote.

City of Edinburgh Council

Applications for works in the footway go through the council's own process, and heritage or conservation area status can add a planning step. We confirm the requirement for the individual address.

These entries describe the approval process, not a policy commitment. We confirm the current position for your specific address and street before proposing any works.

Already have renewable assets?

Funding is not the only opportunity. Understanding the condition, safety and performance of existing solar, battery or charging assets could identify problems, risks and optimisation opportunities — particularly where an installation has never been independently inspected.
