EV charging funding for education

Schools, colleges and education estates can usually claim charging support through the same routes as other organisations, subject to scheme criteria and the institution's own approval process.

The estate constraints are different from a commercial site: listed buildings, safeguarded access, term-time working and public accountability for how the asset is used.

Typical use

Staff, fleet, minibus and visitor charging

Applicant

The institution, through its own approvals

Common constraint

Older supply and distribution infrastructure

Approach

Phased deployment with capacity headroom

Funding routes for education estates

Each card is generated from our central funding database. Where a window has closed, it says so — we do not present a closed scheme as open.

Government chargepoint grant

Details pending confirmation

EV chargepoint grant for education institutions

Chargepoint support for eligible schools, colleges and education providers installing charging for staff, fleet and visitor vehicles on site, alongside the workplace route where the organisation qualifies.

Designed for
School / education provider, Public-sector organisation, Charity
Potential support
Published per-socket grant, subject to the scheme's own caps.
Key considerations
Eligible education institutions with off-street parking and defined staff, fleet or visitor use. The application is made by the institution, and installation must follow approval.

Public-sector grant and loan

Details pending confirmation

Public sector decarbonisation and Salix funding

Capital support routes for public bodies and education estates decarbonising their buildings and estates, including heating, fabric and some electrical infrastructure. Applications are made by the public body, often with a technical feasibility study.

Designed for
Public-sector organisation, School / education provider, Charity
Potential support
Set by the funding programme and by the estate's application.
Key considerations
Public-sector bodies and eligible education institutions, applying through the scheme's own process, usually with a feasibility study and a quantified carbon saving.

Government chargepoint grant

Workplace Charging Scheme

A voucher-based grant for eligible organisations installing chargepoints for staff and visitors. The organisation applies, receives a voucher, and then books an eligible installer within the voucher period.

Designed for
Business, Charity, Public-sector organisation, School / education provider, Fleet operator
Potential support
350 pounds per eligible socket, up to the published socket cap per applicant.
Key considerations
Eligible registered businesses, charities and public-sector organisations, with off-street parking, designated staff or fleet use, and an eligible installer. Charging is not permitted to be used to generate revenue from the general public under the scheme rules.

What you need to know

What an education estate usually needs

Most schools and colleges start with staff charging and a small number of fleet or minibus bays, then extend later. Designing the containment and capacity for the later phases at the start is what keeps that cheap.

  • Staff, visitor and fleet bay allocation
  • Existing supply and distribution capacity across the campus
  • Load management where a supply upgrade is not affordable
  • Separating public access from staff access where the site is shared
  • Programming works around term time and site safeguarding

Procurement and approval

Education bodies usually need internal approval before committing, and some routes require the institution itself to apply. We provide the technical information a business case needs — capacity, options, phasing and cost — so it can go through the institution's own process.

Funding position

Where an education-specific route exists it is held in our funding database with its current status. Where it is not open, the workplace route is normally the one to check, and the technical assessment is the same either way.

Worked out from published figures

What the published support could add up to

The calculator multiplies the number of sockets by the per-socket figure held in our funding database, and stops at the published cap. It does not model your project cost, because eligible costs are decided by the scheme.

Indicative funding calculator

Enter the number of charging sockets you are considering. The figure uses the published per-socket support held against Workplace Charging Scheme — nothing else.

Indicative maximum support

—

Indicative funding only. Actual grant depends on scheme eligibility, eligible project costs and approval. It is not a quotation, and it does not represent what an installation will cost.

Tell us the site, the number of bays you are considering and who needs to approve the work. We will provide the technical information your business case needs.

We use your details to respond to this enquiry only. We do not apply for funding on your behalf, and we do not decide whether you are eligible.

Already have renewable assets?

Funding is not the only opportunity. Understanding the condition, safety and performance of existing solar, battery or charging assets could identify problems, risks and optimisation opportunities — particularly where an installation has never been independently inspected.
