Battery storage

Battery storage funding

Battery storage rarely has a grant of its own. It is usually supported as part of a wider renewable or energy-efficiency package, or funded commercially on the strength of the saving it produces.

The question that decides a battery project is not the grant — it is the load profile, the tariff, and whether the electrical infrastructure can take it.

Dedicated battery grant

Not generally available on its own

Usual route

Part of a wider eligible measures package or loan

Key technical checks

Supply capacity, location, ventilation, fire strategy

Commercial benefit

Tariff arbitrage, peak reduction, export control

Where storage appears in funding routes

Each card is generated from our central funding database. Where a window has closed, it says so — we do not present a closed scheme as open.

Interest-free loan and cashback

Active

Business Energy Scotland SME loan and cashback

An interest-free loan route for Scottish small and medium-sized businesses and charities installing energy-efficiency or renewable measures, with cashback support where the scheme offers it. The assessment and approval sit with the scheme.

Designed for
Business, Charity, Landlord
Potential support
Loan and cashback levels are set by the scheme. Confirm current published terms.
Key considerations
Scottish SMEs, charities and some landlords, with an eligible measure, a technical assessment and approval from the scheme. Loan terms and cashback availability are set by the scheme.

Government grant and interest-free loan

Active

Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan

The Scottish Government's main domestic route for clean heating and energy efficiency, administered through Home Energy Scotland. Grant support and interest-free loan funding may be available for qualifying measures, and the funding body - not Greentech - decides eligibility.

Designed for
Homeowner, Landlord
Potential support
Grant and loan levels are set by the funding body and vary by measure. Confirm the current published levels with Home Energy Scotland.
Key considerations
Scottish homeowners and some landlords, where the property and the proposed measure meet the scheme's own technical rules. An assessment and a quote from an eligible installer normally form part of the process.

Government loan

Active

Home Energy Scotland landlord support

Loan and grant routes for landlords improving the energy performance of let property in Scotland, delivered through Home Energy Scotland under the same scheme rules as the domestic routes.

Designed for
Landlord, Business
Potential support
Set by the funding body and varies by measure and property.
Key considerations
Landlords of eligible Scottish property, where the measure and the property meet the scheme's technical rules. Energy Performance Certificate conditionality can apply to let property.

What you need to know

How storage gets funded

Where storage is supported, it is almost always inside a scheme that is funding a package: solar plus storage, or a heating upgrade with load management. Business routes tend to be loan based, with the case resting on the saving rather than the grant.

That means the business case has to stand on its own. If the numbers only work with a grant that may not be approved, the project is not yet a project.

The electrical work is the project

A battery adds a significant load and a second source of supply at the same point. Whether it can be connected as planned depends on the incoming capacity, the protection arrangement, and the physical space — none of which can be judged from a photograph.

  • Maximum demand and spare capacity at the origin
  • Protection, isolation and labelling arrangements
  • Thermal and fire separation requirements for the chosen technology
  • Network operator notification where the inverter rating requires it
  • Monitoring and control so the asset is actually used as designed

Where storage earns its place

Storage earns by moving consumption away from expensive periods, by capping peak demand charges on commercial sites, and by keeping generated electricity on site instead of exporting it at a lower value. Each of those depends on metering data, which is why we ask for half-hourly or interval data where it exists.

Discuss a storage project

Send the site details, the current supply capacity and what you want storage to achieve. We will come back with the technical position and the funding routes worth checking.

We use your details to respond to this enquiry only. We do not apply for funding on your behalf, and we do not decide whether you are eligible.

Already have renewable assets?

Funding is not the only opportunity. Understanding the condition, safety and performance of existing solar, battery or charging assets could identify problems, risks and optimisation opportunities — particularly where an installation has never been independently inspected.
