Solar panel funding in Scotland

There is no universal standalone grant that makes solar panels free. What exists is targeted support — typically loan or grant funding for eligible measures through schemes with their own rules, alongside business and landlord routes.

This page explains what is genuinely available, what it depends on, and how the electrical side of a solar installation is usually where a project succeeds or stalls.

Standalone 'free solar' grant

Does not exist as a universal offer

Typical support

Loan or grant funding within a scheme's eligible measures

Key technical checks

Roof, structure, earthing, inverter location, DNO

Consent

Owner's consent; building standards or planning in some cases

Interest-free loan and cashback

Active

Business Energy Scotland SME loan and cashback

An interest-free loan route for Scottish small and medium-sized businesses and charities installing energy-efficiency or renewable measures, with cashback support where the scheme offers it. The assessment and approval sit with the scheme.

Designed for
Business, Charity, Landlord
Potential support
Loan and cashback levels are set by the scheme. Confirm current published terms.
Key considerations
Scottish SMEs, charities and some landlords, with an eligible measure, a technical assessment and approval from the scheme. Loan terms and cashback availability are set by the scheme.

Government grant and interest-free loan

Active

Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan

The Scottish Government's main domestic route for clean heating and energy efficiency, administered through Home Energy Scotland. Grant support and interest-free loan funding may be available for qualifying measures, and the funding body - not Greentech - decides eligibility.

Designed for
Homeowner, Landlord
Potential support
Grant and loan levels are set by the funding body and vary by measure. Confirm the current published levels with Home Energy Scotland.
Key considerations
Scottish homeowners and some landlords, where the property and the proposed measure meet the scheme's own technical rules. An assessment and a quote from an eligible installer normally form part of the process.

Government loan

Active

Home Energy Scotland landlord support

Loan and grant routes for landlords improving the energy performance of let property in Scotland, delivered through Home Energy Scotland under the same scheme rules as the domestic routes.

Designed for
Landlord, Business
Potential support
Set by the funding body and varies by measure and property.
Key considerations
Landlords of eligible Scottish property, where the measure and the property meet the scheme's technical rules. Energy Performance Certificate conditionality can apply to let property.

What you need to know

What funding actually looks like for solar

Domestic support normally arrives through an energy scheme that lists solar PV or storage among its eligible measures, with the level set by the funding body. For businesses and charities, interest-free loan routes and cashback support are the more common mechanism.

Any figure you see quoted should be traced back to the scheme's own publication. Rates are revised, and an out-of-date figure is worse than no figure because it changes what a customer expects to pay.

What the survey has to establish

Solar is an electrical installation on a structure, and both halves matter. We record the roof's orientation, pitch and condition, the structural fixing method, cable routes, inverter and battery locations, and the state of the earthing and distribution arrangement.

  • Usable roof area and shading across the year
  • Inverter and battery position, ventilation and access
  • Supply capacity, earthing arrangement and protective devices
  • Export limitation or a network application, depending on system size
  • Fire safety and access provisions where the system sits on a commercial building

Export, tariffs and payback

A solar system earns by generating, by exporting, and by displacing imported electricity. Which of those dominates depends on when the property uses power, which is why storage and load shifting are usually part of the conversation rather than an afterthought.

Ask about solar funding and suitability

Send us the property type, the roof, and what you want the system to do. We will tell you which routes are worth checking and what the installation would involve.

We use your details to respond to this enquiry only. We do not apply for funding on your behalf, and we do not decide whether you are eligible.

A scheme not listed here?

We only publish routes we can point to a source for. If you have seen funding mentioned elsewhere, send it to us and we will check the current position rather than guess.

Already have renewable assets?

Funding is not the only opportunity. Understanding the condition, safety and performance of existing solar, battery or charging assets could identify problems, risks and optimisation opportunities — particularly where an installation has never been independently inspected.
